Job Description
The Queen Conch Aquaculture Operator position requires hands-on skills, a willingness to learn, and the ability to implement a wide variety of functions necessary to properly run a queen conch aquaculture facility. The operator will carry out established protocols to increase the productivity of the hatchery and provide feedback to increase the efficiency of the daily workload. The operator is responsible for the care of the Queen Conch eggs, larvae, and juveniles housed in the Queen Conch Hatchery of Curacao Sea Aquarium Park. The operator’s duties focus on providing care for these marine creatures and maintaining a quality and presentable environment for these animals to live in
Key Responsibilities
- Care for the conchs during all stages of development.
- Water quality management.
- Food Preparation for cultured queen conch.
- Properly following feeding schedules and daily regimes.
- Cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Filling in daily logs and data collection sheets.
- Maintaining and cleaning tanks, containers, and tubing.
- Underwater work with CSA queen conch population.
- Collecting queen conch eggs in the dolphin pools.
- Collecting and culturing live rock.
- Social Media and Communications.
Assisting visiting scientists and research programs.
Skills and Qualifications
- High school Diploma, minimum VMBO. (Preferably a completed Animal Care education (MBO level).
- Animal Care, Aquarium, or Zoo experience.
- Knowledge of marine aquaria, organisms, and/or ecosystems.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
- Deliver punctual and tidy work.
- Creative, energetic, flexible, loyal, realistic, and committed.
- Good swimming skills, open water dive certificate is a plus.
- Applicant should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Applicant should be familiar with basic digital photography and Internet applications.
- A good command of English and Dutch language, Papiamentu, and Spanish are recommended.
